Purcell's Battery

Purcell's Battery was recruited in and around Richmond Va.  The battery was named for John Barry Purcell an affluent merchant, who reached into his bank account and equipped the entire battery.  Mustered into service at Camp Mercer in Fredericksburg, Va, the battery was placed under the command of Colonel William Ransom Johnson Pegram.  During the course of the war the battery saw action at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, and Petersburg.  The battery did such splendid service as to acquire, from the troops of Heth's division the name of "The Fighting Battalion".
